At Mansfield Dental Care and Orthodontics, saving your teeth from extraction is important to us. If at all possible, we will save a tooth from being extracted. Sometimes extractions become necessary if a tooth is severely decayed, broken beyond repair or otherwise damaged past the point of saving. There are times, though, when treatment can be performed to save a tooth from extraction. Root canal therapy is one of the treatments we offer that can save a tooth from being removed.
What is a Root Canal?
When the decay of a tooth begins, normally just removing the decay and filling the tooth is sufficient. However, once the decay spreads and reaches all the way down to the pulp of the tooth, it is at risk of extraction if the decay isn’t removed quickly. Severe tooth decay can also cause a bad toothache. A root canal works to remove the infection from the entire tooth, including the pulp. Once the decay is completely removed, a dental crown is used to seal and preserve the tooth.
For root canal therapy, your dentist will ensure that you are completely numb before beginning. Your dentist will then carefully work to remove all decay that is present in the tooth and also remove the pulp of the tooth. Once all of the decay has been removed, the tooth will be sealed. Sedation dentistry can be used to help you to be more relaxed throughout the entire appointment. Your dentist can discuss with you the best sedation choice for your visit. Following a root canal, a dental crown will most likely be recommended to cover the tooth. If your dentist recommends root canal therapy, we suggest scheduling your appointment right away in order to avoid further infection, pain or extraction.
